Niranjana Shankar
Niranjana Shankar is an accomplished singer and songwriter originally from India, who has been living in New York City since 2003. Her musical journey began at the age of five, encouraged by her parents—her father’s love for jazz and her mother’s knowledge of Carnatic music profoundly influenced her artistic development. Niranjana's music reflects her rich cultural heritage and the global influences she absorbed growing up in India. The early '90s marked a pivotal time in her life when she discovered Western music through cassettes and CDs, igniting her dreams of becoming a performer. She credits her father for introducing her to legendary artists like Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald, shaping her musical style. Niranjana's performances showcase her captivating voice and ability to connect deeply with her audience, making her a unique presence in the New York music scene.
Her upcoming single is a rendition of the jazz standard Detour Ahead.
It offers a fresh yet soulful interpretation of this beautiful classic written by Herb Ellis, Johnny Frigo & Lou Carter. Her version features an all-star lineup full of incredibly talented musicians including legends pianist Kirk Lightsey, bassist Santi Debriano, and drummer Tommy Campbell, and organist Matt Smith.
Niranjana brings both reverence for jazz tradition and a contemporary sensibility, making Detour Ahead the perfect introduction to her world as an artist. In her own words:
Whether it is Kirk Lightsey’s compassion, or Santi’s dedication, Tommy’s childlike brilliance, and Matt’s quietude or Andrea’s vision, words fail me as I try to express my gratitude for the opportunity to not just witness their brilliance, but also have this chance to participate in the symphony of our experiences. Our music, I would like to think, goes back to the very beginning, when the most prominent of all sounds in life was the thrum of a heartbeat. Our compositions are woven together as a way of kneeling in front of the keeper of that heartbeat.
